Key points at a glance
- OCT scans capture detailed 3D images of the retina and optic nerve
- They can detect eye conditions before symptoms appear
- The test is painless, non-invasive and takes only a few minutes
- No eye drops are required in most cases
- Recommended when there is a family history of eye disease or unexplained vision changes

An OCT scan (short for Optical Coherence Tomography) is a quick, completely painless eye scan that takes highly detailed pictures of the back of the eye. It creates a 3D image of the retina and optic nerve — two vital parts of your child’s vision system — without ever touching the eye, in just a few minutes.

What is an OCT scan?
Optical Coherence Tomography uses safe light waves to take cross-section images of the retina. Think of it as an ultrasound for the eye — but using light instead of sound.
The result is a detailed view of each distinct layer of the retina, giving our optometrists information that a standard eye test simply can’t show.
Why is an OCT scan important for children’s eye health?
Children rarely report vision problems — they assume everyone sees the way they do. An OCT scan helps us check for changes inside the eye that wouldn’t be picked up during a standard exam, so we can:
- Detect eye conditions earlier, before they affect vision
- Monitor eye health more accurately over time
- Track whether an existing condition is stable or progressing
When might our optometrist recommend an OCT scan?
Not every child needs an OCT scan at every visit. Our optometrist may recommend one if:
- There is a family history of eye disease
- Your child has unexplained changes in vision
- The optic nerve appears unusual during an eye test
- TThere are signs of retinal changes
- A baseline scan is needed to monitor eye health as your child grows
- An existing eye condition needs to be tracked over time
The scan helps guide clinical decisions and ensures nothing important is missed.
What is an OCT scan like for kids?
Children find the OCT scan easy and comfortable. It is:
- Painless
- Non-invasive
- Very quick — usually completed in a couple of minutes
- Safe for children of all ages
- Does not require additional eye drops
Your child simply rests their chin on the machine and looks at a light while the scan is taken. Most kids barely notice it’s happening.
